Perry was born July 25, 1968 in Chicago, Illinois to Laurie Metcalf Perry and Jeff Perry. One of her first TV appearances were Jackie Harris on ABC's sitcom Roseanne. Her mother portrayed her role. The parents of her didn't want her to take on acting roles until she was older and worried about the consequences of stress. Perry states that she did not want to become an actor during high school, but she decided to begin playing as a way to make friends during her time at Northwestern University when she switched to it from Boston University. Perry, after graduating from Boston University, moved to New York in search of TV roles. Perry was able to land small roles in shows like Law & Order: Criminal Intent. Then, homelessness brought her back to California in search of theater jobs. Perry performed with her mom on stage in The Other Place at Broadway, back in 2013. The show featured her father Kevin McKidd and Eugene O'Neill's Pulitzer Prize winning drama Anna Christie in the year 2015 at the Odyssey Theatre Ensemble, West Los Angeles. Perry played a lead role in the drama's nine episodes from 2016 on ABC's drama The Family. In 2017 she had a recurring role on The ABC Political thriller Scandal with her father. In the same year, the actress was selected to play the younger model of Mary Cooper (Sheldon Cooper's mother) on Young Sheldon, a spin-off of the CBS sitcom The Big Bang Theory again as a teen version of her mother's character. Despite her family link to the character she received the role through an audition.
